Rustic Weddings in the Central Highlands Ballarat Bendigo Castlemaine Creswick
What is your style? Sometimes you want glamour and sometimes you just want timeless and elegant. Especially since Covid, people have changed and are looking for something different from inner city locations. They may be looking for the outdoor, indoor, property type locations with the big barn or shed that you can find out in the Central Highlands area. It could also be out at Ballarat, Creswick, Mount Mitchell or maybe on the other side like the Yarra Valley or the Dandenongs.
We also photograph micro weddings. If you are seeking a small intimate venue and photography to match, chat with us about what you want…and we can tailor a package to meet your photography needs.

Finding your perfect wedding spot involves a lot of research and time. But for those who value the location, they would not mind spending the time researching the various options. If that gets too hard, we recommend a wedding planner like Gathered Events or Events with Amie. These are also locations where I had the chance to make contact with the owners and operators and had a pleasant conversation with them…even though I was not a paying customer. Then there were those who were not so pleasant!! lol
Anyway, back to our organic, down to earth, rustic, natural and intimate locations. The core components would be achievable as you could dress a place up or dress it down to give it the feel of sophistication in a rustic, bohemian and intimate background. There are also with activities that you include as part of your wedding week…what about truffle hunting or baking? Especially, when you have family and friends coming in from far away, will this not be a great way to warm up to the big day? I think that weddings should not be only come and meet and go away again…but a time to be savoured by all…like a good and slow meal. Building up the camaraderie and making connections with those you have not seen for awhile…
Being photographers, we photograph the start of life and probably the end. Most times, it is at a wedding and a funeral where you see the whole group of friends and family again. God willing..such times are and far and few between! So, for us photographing such moments is so important as it is part of your story to pass on to your children and grandchildren and the future generations.
Here are five locations in Ballarat that could sway towards sophistication and others back to basic vibes and some surprises! In my next post, I will write more about the venues in the Central Highlands.
Sovereign Hill Ballarat – perfect for destination weddings with historical significance. I think that there is not enough information regarding the offerings that they have for weddings. But having photograph a wedding there, the Event organiser took us through the rooms and showed us what could be offered.
As we all know, Sovereign Hill is a museum and once you enter it, it is a whole experience in itself of life in the Goldrush days. It is authentic and even the staff that are at your event are dressed up in that time period. It can offer an exotic, one-of-a-kind appeal as your wedding venue. From historical buildings to beautiful gardens including a stunning large pond with a boardwalk where you can have your ceremony and reception all in one place. Peter Rowland Group has proudly been appointed as Hospitality partner at Sovereign Hill.
Sovereign Hill has several locations to accomodate from 20 guests to 180 guests. There is the Charlie Napier Hotel, the New York Bakery, United States Hotel and Dining room, the Victoria Theatre and Theatre Retiring room (with its $150k table) that is just perfect for a micro wedding. You can also have your ceremony on the main street surrounded by the historical buildings…There is also an on-site hotel for your guests.
Sovereign Hill combines the charm of yesteryear with sophistication of a modern wedding. Your guests will be captivated by a stunning backdrop of this unique 1850’s Museum and delighted by the charm of the costumed hosts and wait staff. There are only unique opportunities for photos and the convenient of onsite accommodation is sure to make any wedding memorable.
Located on historic Lydiard Street in the heart of Ballarat, this hotel is the legendary Australian gold-rush era. Built in 1862 on the site of Ballarat’s first licensed pub, the hotel is a prestigious location to hold your wedding. The hotel is a perfect combination of historic charm, tradition and innovation. The richness of the William Morris wall papers to the antique staircase adds such a richness that you cannot get anywhere else. It is bespoke, imaginative and you will be unforgettable!
Run and owned by Daniel and Diane, the Green House is an exciting new store located in a historic warehouse in Ballarat. Botanica Ballarat is a beautiful function place for the Green House.
The bright and airy space is made warm and inviting with festoon lighting, greenery and refined design touches. Clever and flexible floor plans and furniture placing to suit your dream ambiance and style, with ample space for any and all the wedding extras you need from a band and dance floor to photo booth and guest book station. Classic elegance in an urban wonderland, the Greenhouse is a huge converted warehouse, with soaring ceilings and drenched in light and luscious overgrown greenery. The self contained space has everything you need for a wedding that will be looked back on with love for years to come.
The Greenhouse is the space where real life fairy tales are made.
Situated on the edge of Lake Wendouree and the Ballarat Botanical Gardens, Pipers by the Lake will help make your wedding day, beautiful, memorable and stress free. We have spoken to the Functions Coordinator and have had meals there. It is a beautiful, open and airy place to have your wedding. With the gardens next door, you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to your family and bridal portraits.
The tram museum is just next door and you can hire the tram for a ride too! There is also the chance to have your cocktails on boards before heading off for your reception.
Are you overwhelmed by the number of venues or just do not know where to start? We can help you narrow your choices down to just a handful. Then, you will need to go out and visit those places to get a feel of them yourself.
