The Opening of the National Centre of Photography in Ballarat
We had the pleasure of photographing the soft opening of the National Centre of Photography in Ballarat, an exciting new addition to the city’s creative and cultural landscape.
The opening also celebrated the Ballarat Youth Photography Prize, developed by the Ballarat International Foto Biennale’s youth council, GroupFoto. It was wonderful to see the work of young photographers recognised and celebrated as part of this important occasion.
National Centre of Photography – Lydiard Street, Ballarat
The National Centre of Photography is housed within the beautifully restored heritage-listed Union Bank building, dating from the 1860s. The former bank was constructed in 1863–64, to the design of architect Leonard Terry.
The restoration has given this historic building a new purpose, creating an accessible, international-class gallery dedicated to photography. It is a wonderful example of how Ballarat’s heritage buildings can be thoughtfully adapted for contemporary creative use.
The new gallery and exhibition spaces will enable the Ballarat International Foto Biennale to present local, national and international photography throughout the year. The centre will also provide opportunities for education, workshops and community engagement, creating a space where photographers, artists, students and the wider community can come together.
Celebrating photography in Ballarat
As photographers based in Ballarat, it was particularly special for us to be there with our cameras, documenting the people, atmosphere and moments surrounding the opening.
Photography has such an important place within Ballarat’s creative community. Events like this provide an opportunity to see photography not simply as an art form, but as a way of telling stories, documenting people and places, encouraging conversation and connecting communities.
We particularly enjoyed seeing the Ballarat Youth Photography Prize celebrated alongside the opening. Supporting emerging photographers and giving young people a platform to share their ideas and perspectives is an important part of encouraging the next generation of photographic talent.
Looking forward
The opening of the National Centre of Photography marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for photography in Ballarat. We’re looking forward to seeing the exhibitions, programs and community activities that develop within this beautiful new space.
We were delighted to have the opportunity to photograph the beginning of this new chapter and help document an important moment in Ballarat’s creative history.
