Behind the Scenes – Preparing for a Photoshoot – Ballarat, Melbourne
Behind the Scenes – Preparing for a photo shoot.
Curious about what goes on when we prepare for a wedding photoshoot…
Preparing for a wedding photoshoot involves careful planning and attention to detail to ensure a smooth and successful experience. We normally take a week or two to prepare for a photoshoot…Hence, the collections we quote are not just for the time that we are photographing but also for the prep before and after the big day. There is a lot of prep work….Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at what we typically do to prepare for a wedding photoshoot:
- Initial Consultation: Before the wedding day, we usually meet with the couple to discuss their vision, preferences, and specific requirements. This consultation helps us to understand the couple’s style, the timeline of events, and any special moments or traditions they want to capture.
- Scouting Locations: If we are not familiar with the wedding venue, we may visit it in advance to scout for potential photoshoot locations, assess lighting conditions, and plan creative compositions. Knowing the layout of the venue helps us optimise their time and capture the best possible shots. Hey, we also photograph destination weddings…and we have learnt to be quick, decisive and get tips from the locals. Getting to know and talk to people is such a rewarding part of what we do….
- Equipment Check: We meticulously check and prepare our equipment, including cameras, lenses, flashes, batteries, memory cards, and any additional gear we may need. We ensure everything is in working order and fully charged to avoid any technical issues on the wedding day.
- Creating a Shot List: Based on the couple’s preferences and the schedule of events, we create a shot list outlining the key moments and poses we plan to capture during the wedding day. This serves as a guide to ensure no important shots are missed. We also ask the couple if there are locations that are important to include in their photoshoot.
- Backup Plan: We always have a backup plan in place to address unforeseen circumstances such as bad weather, equipment failure, or schedule changes. They may carry spare equipment, have backup locations in mind, or adjust their shooting plan on the fly to adapt to changing conditions.
- Coordination with Vendors: We believe in communication and communicate with other vendors involved in the wedding, such as the wedding planner, celebrant, videographer, florist, caterer and venue coordinator. This ensures everyone is on the same page and can collaborate seamlessly to execute the couple’s vision.
- Packing Essentials: On the day of the wedding, we pack our gear, including cameras, lenses, flashes, memory cards, tripod, reflectors, and any props or accessories they may need. We also bring essentials such as water, snacks, and a timeline of events to stay organized and energized throughout the day.
- Dressing Professionally: While not always necessary, many photographers choose to dress professionally and blend in with the wedding guests. This helps them maintain a low profile and focus on capturing candid moments without drawing unnecessary attention to themselves. I am still looking for that stand out bow tie!!
By meticulously preparing and planning ahead of time, photographers ensure they are well-equipped to capture the beauty, emotion, and joy of the wedding day for the happy couple.
