Local Heroes – Ballarat
A local project celebrating the faces of Ballarat. The makers, the carers, the quiet achievers, and the individuals who show up day after day – often without recognition. The Local Heroes Photography Project was created by Sunflower Imaging Photo Studio, to honour these local stories and preserve them visually, while they are still being lived.
As a photographer based in Ballarat, I have spent years photographing weddings, families, and businesses. What continues to move me most is not perfection, but authenticity — the lived experience etched into faces, hands, and gestures. This project grew from a desire to slow down and truly see the people who form the heart of our community.
Local heroes are not always in the spotlight. They are the volunteers, small business owners, artists, teachers, health workers, tradespeople, and community leaders whose impact is felt quietly but deeply across Victoria. Through this project, I am creating honest, respectful portraits that reflect who these individuals are, not just what they do.
Why I am doing this project
This photography project runs from July to Oct 2026, at the Art Hub on Lydiard Street, through Creative City Ballarat. By documenting theses figures through thoughtful professional portraits, I could bring visibility to unsung heroes, fostering a deeper connection between the subjects and the community. Photography transcends language barriers enabling a wide audience to engage with these stories and sparking inspiration and appreciation for the community we live in. These portraits are a way to slow down, acknowledge impact, and preserve a visual record of Ballarat’s people for the future. This is not about accolades or publicity. It is about acknowledgement, about saying thank you. About ensuring that the faces behind the work are seen, remembered and valued in this too fast paced and too digitalised world.
The Local Heroes Photography Project in Ballarat is my way of learning and meeting the people that care enough to give back without expecting too much. Except for the Art Hub, the work is self funded. It is a personal and professional commitment to storytelling, connection and preservation – and a reminder that the true legacy of a place lies in its people.
The Experience
Nomination based, Studio portrait project.
Each participant is photographed by Caroline at the Art Hub photo studio during this period. Every session will be guided by the subject’s story with a focus on capturing the depth and dignity of the subject. Asa creative, I also intent it to be artistic but true to subject.
Each session includes:
- A private 60 minute based session
- A story driven pre photo session questionnaire
- One final portrait print chosen by Caroline
- This is not a commercial shoot. No digital files are provided
The final portraits will be shared through an online gallery, social media and a future public exhibition creating a lasting visual record of the volunteers, carers, emergency workers, community leaders who give so much to Ballarat and beyond. This is the thread that runs through the people.
HOW to nominate someone
Ballarat and the region of the historical gold fields are full of people who give quietly — volunteers, carers, emergency service workers, mentors, organisers, and neighbours who make Ballarat and the western region a better place simply by showing up.
If you know someone whose quiet contribution deserves to be recognised in this portrait series, you can nominate them below. We welcome nominations from across Western Victoria.
Nominations are open and ongoing in 2026. Every nomination is carefully reviewed. As this is a fine arts project, spaces are limited.
Important details:
- Sessions are complimentary and by invitation only
- A signed released form is required for participation
- U-18s must be accompanied by parent or guardian
- The photographer will select the photo to maintain consistency across the project
